31 Days AgoBT 4th in Muscat… and 4th overall

Nick Moloney and his crew finished in 4th place of the Muscat Extreme Sailing Series Asia event, claiming 4th place of the Asia circuit overall in the process! After a very exciting winter season which ended under the Omani sunshine, it's time for the crew to take a well-deserved rest… and to prepare the future!

83 Days Ago Masirah take victory at Round 2 in Singapore

It was all clear at the top of the leaderboard at the end of five days of racing in Singapore under a kaleidoscope of weather as Oman Sail's Masirah took their second consecutive win at the Extreme Sailing Series Asia. With racing every afternoon, the past five days have been busy for the international fleet of Extreme 40 sailors. Every morning they have taken VIP and media guests out sailing on the reservoir, to experience first hand what it is like to race onboard an Extreme 40. Guests have included government officials, TV crews, journalists, key opinion formers from the business and sailing worlds here in Singapore, as well as youth sailors in the Singapore Olympic sailing squad. Masirah's win brings their score in the overall Extreme Sailing Series Asia scoreboard to a perfect 12, but the real battle is for second place with four teams in contention. BT and China Team and tied in second place with 7 points apiece and Red Bull Extreme Sailing Team and The Wave, Muscat just behind with 6. Nick Moloney, Skipper of BT commented after Day 2, "Crazy conditions today, wind all over the place, big squall through the course half way through the first race, massive shift in wind direction a couple of times, I lost my hat - everything!"

83 Days AgoWorld Yacht Racing Forum

The second edition of the World Yacht Racing Forum finished on 10 December at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. The event was a huge success and the overwhelming feedback from almost 400 delegates was that the World Yacht Racing Forum has established itself as the 'must attend' event for the yacht racing industry. This year, the Forum featured several debates and presentations across all aspects of the business of the sport. Nathalie Quéré, Head of Sponsorship at BT Global Services took part of the debate: 'Leveraging the Sponsorship Deal – How to maximise the Investment' and present the BT Team Ellen project to the attendance. She took the opportunity to say a huge thank you from all at BT for those three years and gave Ellen, Nick and Seb three beautiful paintings while they were all on stage. A unique and emotional moment for everyone in the room!

90 Days AgoRound 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series Asia gets ‘In Gear’ in Singapore

The Formula 1 pit Lane in Singapore is in action again, but this time not to the drone of engines… A new type of sport is in town for five days – the Extreme Sailing Series Asia. Marina Reservoir will play host to the second round of the inaugural Extreme Sailing Series Asia starting this Friday, 11th December. Six state of the art 40-foot catamarans, each crewed by a team of four top professional sailors, and racing at up to 40 miles per hour, will be battling it out for supremacy on the tight races courses just metres off the shoreline by the Singapore Flyer. Twenty-four sailors from 8 nations and between them, three double Olympic Gold medallists, 24 World Championship titles, nine America’s Cup events, 8 Round the World navigations and 114 National Championship titles!

109 Days AgoBT snatch line honours in Around Hong Kong Race

After racing for 26 nautical miles around Hong Kong, the top two boats in the Extreme 40 fleet battled to the line, with BT snatching the lead just 150 metres from the finish line and crossing 14 seconds in front of China Team. The six Extreme 40s will be back to their shorter courses tomorrow, Monday 23 November, in Victoria Harbour. "We are totally pumped," said BT Skipper Nick Moloney (AUS) just after they crossed the finish line just ahead of the home nation Extreme 40, China Team. "It all came down to the last 200 metres. We could see the new wind coming through and we knew that whoever gets the wind first will win. We thought China Team might catch it first, so we did panic a bit, but we edged into first place with the breeze and crossed the line first," he grinned. Johnny Hodgson, who was onboard the winning boat BT agreed. "That was fantastic, I'm really happy to have had the chance to race here. It's great to have the Extreme 40s here in Hong Kong - we need to get them back next year!"

140 Days Ago2009 ISHARES CUP SUM

Well I guess the year was well worse than we originally expected...sure the bottom fell out of the economy forcing us to tighten our belts but we still managed to piece together a nice package which we thought was in for a good show. One thing that we chose to skimp on was sails and training time due to the substantial costs that we could not cover within our budget..these were two big mistakes..we thought that we, as a team, could continue to sail a variety of other craft to stay sharp and just come together for the event weeks. It became very clear early that this was not going to work as there are not too many boats around that require the same skill set as the X40. I think this has been our biggest let down for the year and if we had our time again we would have pushed for more time together on the boat. Not a lot came together for us as a team on the water and we only managed a hand full of individual race wins all year. Sails was also regrettable..sail shape and performance deterioration is measurable by digitizing the sails cords off photos. I was very surprised at how quickly our headsails lost their performance design shape..we ended up absolutely exhausting our whole inventory and finished the season using a rented headsail of Mike Golding (Ecover) and our 3 season old mainsail..the knock on from this was a speed problem right from the beginning of the year. Having said the above, the team were amazing..never dropped their heads and just kept continually looking for solutions and supporting each other. It was a tough year and none of us like getting a beating on the race course. We hopefully wont be in the same situation again next year and be able to run with the pack. I am regularily asked if I would do the series again and my answer today is 'yep, I don't want to finish my time in this class with a 6th place over all as our signing off result...and besides, what else would we race..these boats and this series are awesome!'

151 Days AgoA mixed bag of results...

After a great start to the Almeria event yesterday, BT struggled a bit on the race course today and did not manage to hold on to their lead. The pressure is certainly building up for the top 3 boats as tomorrow will decide who will be crowned 2009 champions in the Series, but mid-fleet the battle will also be very interesting to follow, with (a la place de wu) 6 boats in less than 10 points, BT being in 6th place just one point behind Renaissance. Anything can still happen for the middle pack and every point will be harshly fought for. Nick Moloney: "We will need a massive scoring tomorrow on the water to get back in the game after leading day one. We will be pushing hard for the final day of the iShares Cup 2009." Darren Bundock: "Went from hero to zero today. Not such a good day for BT Extreme 40 and we have slipped to 6th. Anyway, the fleet is still all close with only 2 points from 3rd. Final day tomorrow. Bring it on !"

151 Days AgoOpening day goes to BT !

Opening day goes to BT ! The 10-boat Extreme 40 fleet completed four races today on a short 400-meter course in a light 5 knots of southerly breeze with the starts and first turning mark proving critical. It was BT who excelled with a 4th, 1st, 3rd and 5th place. "We have just returned to the hotel after day one of the Ishares Cup in Almeria, Spain. This has been our best result so far this season, now leading the event after the first day of racing….its about time. Kiel event and Amsterdam was poor result through a growing boat speed problem. We have managed to rent one of Mike Goldings headsails for this event and are using our two year old mainsail but left the water today with a 4th, 1st, 3rd and a 5th to lead the fleet by 5 points. It has been a tough season for us so far and it’s great to finally step on to the event podium in first place today.”

166 Days AgoTough times...

BT had another rough day in Amsterdam, plagued by light winds and tricky situations in which the crew felt they could not really make their teamwork come to fruition. A second place in race 4 came as a welcome encouraging final note for today, nevertheless the biys didnot hide their frustration tonight. Hopefully, with more wind on the race course tomorrow, BT will be more at ease and will show results in line with their potential.

167 Days Ago"Things didn't go our way"

It has been a hard opening for BT Extreme 40 in day 1 of the iShares Cup Amsterdam. 8 races have been completed in shifty wind conditions, gusting over 10 knots on the tight racecourse. In race 4, Nick Moloney and his crew unfortunately hit Masirah, who subsequently had to retire for the day. "Very bad day for BT today, we almost sank a boat, we had bad results, bad starts... It just didn't go our way today. The good thing is that it can't be worse and tomorrow is another day, everything is still possible ! It's my 3rd time here and it's really hard to get used to those tricky conditions, there's no escape and you pay a high price for your mistakes. There's no secret but if you manage to get a good start and escape from the rest of the fleet on the first tack, you're in a good position" explained Darren Bundock after day 1 of the iShares Cup Amsterdam. Tomorrow is another day, the race committee is planning on starting 6 races. The weather forecast is lighter than today, 6 knots gusting over 8.
