BT Extreme 40 - 6th of the iShares Cup 200918 October 2009

Busy period for BT Extreme 40 and BT IMOCA 602 October 2009
Both BT boats and crews are in the final stages of preparation for the biggest events of their season... There is just a week to go before the final event of the iShares Cup in Almeria, Spain and Nick Moloney and the BT Extreme 40 crew will have to put in a strong performance to secure their current overall 5th place. BT skipper, Nick Moloney, remains positive: "Almeria is the last event and the sailing conditions should be completely different to Kiel and Amsterdam, where we had our worst results. In Spain we will have an open race course and more wind, and we clearly are better in those conditions." For the BT IMOCA 60 team, the countdown has started for Sébastien Josse and Jean François Cuzon who will start the double handed Transat Jacques Vabre, the pinnacle race of the IMOCA season, in just over one month... "With the new course from Le Havre to Costa Rica, we will need a lot of tactical lucidity. We may have to go really north this time, taking the shortest ‘circle’ route to the eastern coast of America then head south – it’s certainly an option to look at. The Caribbean sea is another difficulty and a place where we are not used to sail. The good thing is we are not crossing the Equator, and that means not having to tackle the tricky intertropical convergence zone." explained Sébastien regarding the new race course,
Difficult times at the iShares Cup Kiel1 September 2009
The fourth round of the iShares Cup in Kiel over the weekend produced seen some great racing and drama. Conditions were difficult for the 10 Extreme - squalls, torrential rain, thunder and lightning with the wind range from 6 knots to 14 knots and occasional some strong gusts that caught out British skipper Mike Golding, who capsized during racing on the first day. After a nail bitting final race, Oman Sail Masirah scored their third consecutive victory, followed by teammate Renaissance and the French boat Groupama 40. It was again a mixed bag of fortunes for Nick Moloney and the BT Extreme 40 crew, although two wins in race 6 and 8 showed their capabilities if a good start could be had. But the team struggled to match the furious pace of the front runners, despite trying a different rig set up on the final day as they struggled with the boat speed, and finally finished 8th at the German event.
BT Extreme 40 - 4th at the iShares Cup at Cowes Week7 August 2009
Nick Moloney and the BT crew on the BT Extreme 40 had a good start at the iShares Cup at Cowes Week – round 3 of the six-stage pan-European circuit – scoring podium places in the first two races of this UK event. Co-creator of the Extreme 40 class, Mitch Booth, was once again on the helm as replacement for the injured Darren Bundock. But as expected it proved to be a challenging test on the water with extremely close competition from the nine competitors and tricky racing conditions with strong gusts and strong tides.
